Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the electromyographic(EMG) activity of shoulder muscles while watching Video Display Terminal(VDT) with flexed neck and neutral neck posture.
Methods: Sixteen students performed works with flexed neck posture(posture 1) and neutral neck posture( posture 2). Electromyographic activity of the upper trapezius was measured in each posture. The EMG amplitude was normalized using the reference voluntary contraction(RVC). A paired t-test was used to compare the difference in the activity of each muscle in posture 1 and posture 2. Collected data were analyzed by SPSS 14.0.
Results: The mean %RVC of the upper trapezius was 4.6%(left), 4.4%(right) in posture 1 and 3.9% (left), 3.5%(right) in posture 2. There was significant difference in the EMG amplitudes of both upper trapezius in posture 1(p<0.05).
Conclusion: Muscle activity of both upper trapezius is increased in flexed neck posture. To reduce loading in the shoulder muscles during VDT working, the head must be maintained in neutral head posture.
